As part of the implementation of the Online Access Act (OZG), BundID offers you a centralised account for identification with the administration. For this purpose, authentication means of all common security levels are offered (e.g. with an online ID card) as well as officially authorised digital identification means of the EU member states. You can also have your online application form pre-filled by entering your personal details. This saves time, is secure and prevents you from making typing errors.

The BundID also has a mailbox through which authorities can send messages and notifications to citizens (so-called ‘digital feedback channel’).

To create your BundID account, you must navigate to the “Create account” section. As a rule, you will be redirected to BundID as part of the authentication process, but you can also access the BundID website independently outside of this process. When clicking on the “Create account” button or link,

you are given four options for creating an account:

• Username & Password
• eID card
• ELSTER certificate
• EU Identity

Select an option and follow the steps to verify your identity, to complete your personal data and to verify your email address. Finally, enter your account details. Your BundID account will be created.

Each of these options represents one credential. The credential Username & Password is always created, no matter which option you choose.

We recommend that you use a means of access with a high level of trust, such as an ID card with an online function, when you create your BundID account. However, you still have the option of adding means of access to your account at a later date. For example, you can add your ID card with online function at a later date, even if you have initially created a BundID account using a user name and password.

Until recently, the only way to file a request was to visit your municipal office or responsible authority. You needed to book an appointment, appear in person and prove your identity at the office. Now, you can do all that from the convenience of your own home. Go to the Bundesportal, select the desired online application and apply for it online. Use BundID to log in and prove your identity. Your online request can be automatically filled out with your data. Later, you can receive official communications in the electronic inbox of your BundID account.
